How long is the EBC Helicopter Trek?

This is a 12-day Nepal trip including the 9-day trek straight to Everest Base Camp (EBC) and helicopter return, making it the fastest EBC trekking experience.

What to expect in a nutshell?

The adventure kicks off in style with a stunning mountain flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. Flying over the Himalayas is an experience in itself. But once we land in Lukla, the real trekking begins.

The first few days will challenge you, with constant climbs and descents testing your legs. But don’t worry – as you get into the rhythm of the trek, you’ll notice it getting a bit easier with each step.

Your Everest journey leads you through the breathtaking Khumbu region, home of the Sherpa people. Surrounded by the soaring peaks of the world’s tallest mountains, the landscape feels otherworldly.

Yes, the trails are steep, and the high altitude can feel heavy on your body. But the sense of pride and joy when you complete this trek? It’s absolutely unforgettable. And to top it all off, you’ll enjoy an incredible helicopter ride back to Kathmandu, giving you one last chance to soak in the majestic views of the Himalayas.

What to expect from the accommodations and facilities?

The Everest Base Camp Helicopter Trek is not a mountaineering expedition or a wilderness survival experience. There are many mountain lodges along the way.

Most of the lodges along the EBC trail offer simple double rooms, and shared facilities like the diner and toilets. (Some accommodations have Western toilets while others have more traditional toilets where you will need to squat. 🙂 )

Also, there are often additional facilities available at an extra charge. Such as (hot) showers, wifi and recharging devices (for mobile phone, camera batteries etc).

Am I fit enough for the trek to EBC?

You should be able to walk for 5 to 6 hours a day, with minimal breaks. To get yourself ready, we recommend you to start taking regular hikes around your area.

Don’t have significant hills or mountain terrain in your area? Then you could walk hill intervals on a treadmill and stair stepper twice a week. Most people also benefit from completing full-body strength workouts twice a week.

What is the minimum group size?

This example trip and price are based on 4 people. Want to travel with a different group size? Feel free to ask us for a personal offer – we offer great group discounts.

Can I customize the Everest Base Camp Helicopter Trek?

We’re ready to help create the perfect experience for you.

Flights to Lukla leave from Kathmandu or Ramechhap, depending on the season.

  1. Ramechhap to Lukla (March-May, October-November)
In peak season, flights go from Ramechhap to avoid busy Kathmandu Airport. Ramechhap is a 5-6 hour drive away. Your day starts very early, between 1:00 and 3:00 AM. Along with your guide, you catch the shared shuttle to the airport. The scenic flight to Lukla takes 20 minutes.
  2. Kathmandu to Lukla (January-February, June-September, December)
In the off-season, flights usually leave from Kathmandu. Airlines decide this based on how many travelers there are. You start your day at 5:00 or 6:00 AM. Your guide picks you up at your hotel and takes you to the airport. The scenic mountain flight to Lukla takes 35 minutes.

Upon arrival at Tenzing-Hillary Airport in Lukla (2,804 m / 9,380 ft), your guide will introduce you to your porter(s) if you have booked this service.

After landing, you can explore the village while your porter(s) organizes and loads the trekking equipment. We then start the trek by descending towards the Dudh Koshi River, where we join the main trail to Namche Bazaar.

The walk is gentle, and after passing through the small village of Ghat (2,550 m / 8,366 ft), it’s a short journey to Phakding (2,610 m / 8,560 ft).

mountain flight – lunch & dinner – mountain lodge

After breakfast, you continue trekking along the banks of the Dudh Khosi. You will be crossing this majestic river many on exciting suspension bridges laden with prayer flags many times. After entering Sagamartha National Park, the trail climbs steeply with breathtaking views.

Namche Bazaar (3,441 m / 11,290 ft) known as the Gateway to Everest, is home to many quality restaurants, hotels, lodges, shops, money exchanges, internet cafes and bakeries. Namche is one of the biggest villages along the whole Everest trail.

Today you spend a day in Namche, in order to acclimatize and adjust to the thinning of the air.

If you like, you can opt for a short hike to a museum, celebrating the traditional customs of the Sherpa people. Or, hike to the Syangboche Airport near Everest View Hotel. From this point, you can get rewarding views of the Himalayas with stunning sunrise and sunset over the panorama of Khumbu peaks.

The trek continues along the rushing glacial waters of the Dudh Khosi with magnificent views of the mountains. You trek to an altitude of 3,870 meters today (12,697 ft).

On reaching Tengboche, you can see the local monastery. Inside the monastery are incredibly ornate wall hangings, a 20-foot sculpture of Buddha, and the musical instruments and robes of the Lamas. In the evening or tomorrow morning, you may be invited to observe a prayer ceremony.

From Tengboche the trail drops to Debuche. Then it crosses another exciting suspension bridge on the Imja Khola, and climbs to Pangboche amongst thousands of mani stones. Your uphill trek continues, taking you to the quaint traditional Sherpa village of Dingboche (4,350 m / 14,272 ft) with its exquisite views of Lhotse, Island Peak, and Ama Dablam.

You need to take your time today, to avoid getting affected by the altitude.

Today, you will have another day for acclimatization. You can make a trip to Chhukung valley via the Imja Khola valley, to get a marvellous view of the surrounding mountains. Especially of Lhotse’s massive south wall.

You continue to climb as you’re are heading to the altitude of 4,910 meters at Lobuche (16,210 ft), which is really just a few huts at the foot of giant Lobuche peak. Some breathing problems may arise today, due to the altitude.

breakfast, lunch & dinner – mountain lodge

This is another big and challenging day walk along the Khumbu Glacier and, up to Everest Base Camp (5,364 m / 17,598 ft). This is the closest you can get to Mount Everest without mountaineering equipment. There will likely be a team about to attempt the summit. The view of the Khumbu Icefall from Base Camp is spectacular. You return back to Gorak Shep (5,180 m / 16,942 ft) for the night.

breakfast, lunch & dinner – mountain lodge

This will be one of the most challenging yet rewarding days of the trek. Most of morning in this day, you will spend climbing Mount Kala Patthar (5,545 m / 18,519 ft). This is a small peak by Himalayan standards.

The ascend is demanding, but you can get the most magnificent mountain panorama. Everest (8,848 m / 29,028 ft), the highest point on the planet, towers directly ahead. And on all sides, loom the other giants: Nuptse, Pumori, Chagatse, Lhotse and countless others.

You make a quick descent to Gorak Shep (5,180 m / 18,519 ft) then you catch a helicopter to Lukla and then Kathmandu (1,400 m / 4,600 ft).
